This air raid shelter would have been used during World War Two by the soldiers stationed at the nearby Ordnance Depot. The shelter may also have been used by the soldier’s families.
The shelter is of regular construction, metal sheeting supported by colliery hoops and then covered with earth, the main entrance is made of concrete with steps and the emergency escape shaft has a ladder leading up to a hatch in the ground above. Faint arrows can be seen on the concrete around the emergency escape shaft. The shelter is now flooded and sealed.
