This tunnel was originally excavated as a small air raid shelter for a local school around 1940. A total of 56 people could shelter within the tunnel during an air raid.
The tunnel was possibly expanded at a later date to accommodate up to 180 people. Within the tunnel there were toilets, lighting, heating, bunks and benches. There is roughly 60 feet of overhead cover above the tunnel, it is largely of concrete construction although a section appears to have been lined with railway sleepers and tin.
