Constructed in 1943 this B-17G No. 42-31243 coded GN-Z was assigned to the 427th Bombardment Squadron of the 303rd Bomb Group at RAF Molesworth, Cambridgeshire on the 18th November 1943.

On 1st December 1943 the bomber which was on its first combat mission was ditched on sand flats in Kent due to running out of fuel possibly from flak damage on return from Germany.

All 10 crew members survived and were recovered by British Air Sea Rescue being taken to Manston, Kent.

The bomber was left in place and wreckage was subsequently collected in the 1990s and handed over to the Brenzett Aeronautical Museum.
