These caves were possibly constructed by Napoleonic prisoners of war. It is possible the caves were constructed with the purpose of chalk extraction to be used for lime burning.
There were originally two floors but the upper floor has long since been lost. In total there are 5 brick lined tunnels linked together by cross tunnels, the tunnels are set out in parallel groups, a set of two and a set of three, there were also ventilation shafts, the tunnels seem larger towards the back and this may indicate later build dates.
The caves were also used to store goods that were awaiting payment of customs tax, thus being known as a Bonded Store. During World War Two the caves were used as an Air Raid Shelter and temporary fire station.
