Excavated and constructed in late 1940 these tunnels served as Brigade Battle Headquarters for the Army. The men based at the HQ were to assist in the expected anti invasion preparations and were subordinate to the Battle HQ located in a different area. Located within a quarry the tunnels are constructed of colliery hoops lined with corrugated steel, brick and wooden props.
Some of the tunnels are unlined and as such have fallen victim to chalk falls.
After the Second World War ended the tunnels were sealed. Some original signage remains and there is some original World War Two graffiti in places.
