Chalk Caves

These caves were possibly excavated around 1860. There are three caves in total which are connected by a small tunnel. The excavated chalk was probably used by those who were farming the surrounding land as fertiliser. The chalk was left out in piles during the winter so that the cold weather and frost broke it down ready for the spring.
It is believed that during World War Two the caves were used for ammunition storage by the nearby RAF Airfield.
