The battery was constructed between 1898-1900. It was armed with three 9.2-inch Mark X breech-loading guns with the main role of counter bombardment against enemy shipping in the channel that threatened the port of Dover.

In 1908 a battery command post was constructed towards the rear of the battery. It comprised of two floors. The bottom being a telephone room and the top being an open Depression Range Finding Position.

In 1910 number two gun was removed to Woolwich and the position remained empty hereafter.

During World War Two The battery was fully operational in the coastal defence of Dover owing to the guns almost 10 mile range. The battery subsequently fell out of use in 1956 and has largely fell into ruin.
