This coastal fort was constructed following the findings of the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom.

Construction took place between 1861-1868 with the fort being constructed to defend the confluence of two rivers. The fort was armed with 13 heavy RML’s below which were the magazines and 4 caponiers.

The forts armaments changed over the following years before finally during the Second World War ending up with two 6inch close defence guns that were within bomb proof shelters. Spigot Mortars were also located at each end of the terreplein.

After the the war the fort was sold off and the above ground buildings were subsequently demolished and buried leaving only the subterranean levels behind.
