Corfe Castle’s history dates back to the late 10th century when it was founded by King Edward the Martyr. However, its most notable chapter began with the construction initiated by William the Conqueror around 1066. Over the centuries, the castle evolved, becoming a strategic stronghold and a royal residence.

During the English Civil War in the 17th century, Corfe Castle played a key role. It was a Royalist stronghold and endured a prolonged siege by Parliamentarian forces. In 1646, after a betrayal from within, the castle fell and was subsequently slighted (partially demolished) to prevent its future military use.

The ruins of Corfe Castle have since become an iconic landmark and tourist attraction, preserving the layers of its history and offering a glimpse into medieval England and the turbulent times of civil conflict. The castle’s rich history, marked by royal ownership, strategic importance, and its ultimate role in the Civil War, contributes to its enduring allure.
