This Couvre Port was built around 1779 on defensive lines that already existed. It’s purpose was to be a defensive gateway that gave soldiers access to the field of fire.
During the Napoleonic War it was converted into a hornwork with guns to provide end to end fire along the lines.
In World War Two a anti tank defensive block was added to the Couvre Port and some of it was remodelled as an emergency reservoir.
