Built between 1861 and 1868 following on from the recommendations of the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom that had been established by Lord Palmerston in 1859, as a result of the perceived threat from France. Initially the battery was armed with 4 or 5 heavy rifle muzzle loaders for use against heavy warships, eventually these were replace with more powerful 6inch rifle breach loaders. Following on the battery went through many alterations before being abandoned and left derelict with the only remnants being the ruins left today.
