Forgotten Cement Works

Built during the 1830s these kilns were used by the cement works located on the site.
Below the kilns was a tunnel system that housed narrow gauge railways to allow the movement of waste and other materials around the site.
It seems that the kilns fell out of use by the 1870s-1880s as the site expanded and newer forms of making cement took over.
Some tunnels within the works were converted for use in WW2 as air raid shelters and the majority of this site had been forgotten about until recently uncovered again.
