Built on the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commision, construction of the Fort started in 1870.
The fort was completed and operational in 1872. Originally the fort was designed to be circular in shape and have two tiers of guns but subsidence and expensive cost overruns meant it was only ever built with one tier.
While being used for gunnery practice on 25th January 1879 one of the forts casemates cracked. Due to this the forts guns were never used in anger and the fort was subsequently disarmed before World War One.
During World War Two the fort was used as an observation post before finally being abandoned and the lower levels flooded to prevent vandalism. Here are a few drone photos we have taken of the fort.
