Built on the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission, construction of the Fort started in 1870, completed by 1871 and operational by 1872. Originally the fort was designed to be circular in shape and have two tiers of guns but subsidence and expenseive cost overruns meant it was only ever built with one tier. The forts guns were never used in anger and the fort was subsequently disarmed before World War One.
During World War Two the fort was used as an observation post with pillboxes and platforms being constructed on its roof. It is now a scheduled monument.
