The Gas Company was formed in 1822. Behind their premises a cave was excavated and a well dug within to provide their water supply. The supply of water from the well was of such quantity that it was able to supply the area surrounding the Gas Company’s premises.

By the 1930s The Gas Company had left the premises for a new site elsewhere in the town.

The cave is in the shape of the letter ‘H’, there is one larger cave and a smaller cave in which lies the well that has long since been infilled. The caves are connected by a narrow passage.

Due to the Gas Company using coal to produce domestic gas there is a layer of coal dust within the caves.
