Hougham Battery was constructed in 1941 as a Coastal Battery and was equipped with 3x8inch mark VIII naval guns. It was manned by men of 520 Coastal Regiment, Royal Artillery.
The battery was part of the Western Fortress of Dover and it’s plotting room was co located with the Fortress plotting room.
Within the battery there was the combined Fortress and Battery Plotting Room, the three gun emplacements, Fortress observation posts, Battery observation posts , magazines, fire command post, a war shelter, AA gun with its own magazine and numerous other buildings.
During the 1970s the battery was unfortunately covered over with spoil from the aborted Channel Tunnel construction although some features do still remain and are visible. We have photographed some of the features for this post.
