Built around the 1830s this kiln tunnel was originally part of a large cement works alongside the Thames.
Within the tunnel is a narrow gauge railway to allow the movement of carts. Constructed at intervals within the tunnel are side passages which were located underneath the kilns, this allowed the carts to be pushed into the tunnels beneath the kilns so that waste material could be emptied out into them, once full the carts were then pushed back out onto the main track within the tunnel and taken away for disposal.
