Originally these tunnels would have been Napoleonic era gun casemates that would have provided flanking fire into the ditch opposite. Access into these casemates was provided via a tunnel that lead from the back of them to a spiral staircase.

When World War Two started the 179th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers excavated two further tunnels behind the casemates to provide protected accommodation for the ATS personnel based at the nearby barracks. These tunnels were tin lined and accessed via the Napoleonic spiral staircase.
