Moats Bulwark was constructed between 1539 and 1541 under the orders of King Henry VIII to strengthen further the outer defences of Dover Castle.
The bulwark was designed to counter sea bourne assault, it is the first known fixed gun position established at Dover Castle.
It was originally known as the Turf Bulwark under Dover Castle before being named after its second Captain Stephen Moat.
The Bulwark has gone through many modernisations and alterations through the years, most notably in the 18th Century when Guildford Battery was construction to the east of the Bulwark.
Today all that remains of the Bulwark is the brick reverted upper platform with its zig zag stone and brick steps leading down to the site of the 18th Century and the gatehouse which dates from the 16th Century and is largely a ruin.
