The Dunkirk Evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, was the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk in France to England, between 27 May and 4 June 1940. The mastermind behind the operation was Vice Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay with the evacuation being coordinated from his headquarters in the tunnels beneath Dover Castle. In total 338,000 allied soldiers were successfully evacuated from Dunkirk.
