Designed to house a small detachment of care and maintenance crews for the artillery pieces, known as Invalid Gunners.

The Invalid Gunners were men either too old or unfit for regular service and so were chosen to maintain the guns, stores and also fired salutes and a noon day gun on the fort.

The barracks also housed artillery pieces on the upper floor with the roof being provided with a parapet for infantry.

In the 19th century the barracks became married soldiers' quarters and during the Crimean war became a overspill hospital.

The end casemate was damaged by explosives during World War Two. There was also a light anti aircraft gun fitted to the roof during this period.

Recently the barracks were used in the film The Darkest Hour.
