Originally a tunnel excavated through chalk to link two quarries it was converted in WW2 for use as a public air raid shelter.
The main entrance into the shelter had staggered blast walls installed to provide protection from blasts, attached to the blast walls were the chemical toilet cubicles. It is rumoured another entrance lead out to the road level above the shelter.
Some sections of the shelter have been lined with brick and there also seem to be ventilation tunnels branching off from the main section.
It is believed the shelter could accommodate up to 1000 members of the local population. Evidence of the shelters use can be found strewn across the floor such as bottles and tins.
Graffiti of the period is also caved into the chalk walls with some pencil graffiti being left on the brick lined sections.
The shelter was abandoned at the end of the war and its entrances back filled to prevent access.
