Reigate Fort was constructed as part of the London Defence Scheme in 1898.

It’s purpose was as a mobilisation centre and was used to store ammunition and tools to help in the defence of London.

By 1906 the Government decided that the fort was no longer needed and it was sold to a private owner in 1907.

With the start of the First World War the fort was used again for the storage of ammunition. At the end of the war it was again decommissioned before being recommissioned in the Second World War possibly playing it’s part in the wartime communications for the army’s South East Command.

The fort was designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1972 by English Heritage and has been restored to show what military life was like in the 1890s.
