This tunnel system was excavated by 172 Tunnelling Co, Royal Engineers at a depth of 60 feet below ground level in 1941 and was in service until decommissioned in 1945.

The main purpose of this Royal Naval HQ was to maintain a comprehensive maritime surveillance of the English Channel, this would've included anything that was moving under, over or through the channel itself.

Due to the nature of the activities undertaken within the HQ it was heavily defended, this included machine gun positions, grenade pit, gates and also an observation post and defensive pillboxes at ground level.

Such was the importance of this HQ it remained secret during the War, it’s history and secrets have only started coming to light within the last few decades.
