These tunnels were excavated by the Royal Engineers 171 Tunnelling Company as a Deep Shelter for the men manning the battery at St Margaret's. The shelter consists of two roughly parallel tunnels, both tunnels have a slight 45 degree kink in them for reasons unknown, the tunnels are linked by four short cross tunnels of which one is wider to allow its use as a medical station. The tunnels are lined with corrugated steel sheeting supported by colliery hoops to which plywood was attached.
