The earliest phase of the North Entrance dates to the Napoleonic period. Modernisation of the North Entrance began in 1860 and was subsequently completed in 1864 comprising of a new guard room and inner entrance. Within the North Entrance are three large sunken water tanks that would have provided water to serve the Western Heights Garrison. The North Entrance has two drawbridges with a central tenile that provided access across the defensive ditch which in the event of attack or breech allowed the soldiers within to stop any access to invading forces. Gunrooms at the ditch level provided defence to the ditch in the event of attack. During World War Two the gunrooms were altered and modified by the army.
These photos were taken via a tour provided by the Western Heights Preservation Society. They are doing a brilliant job of preserving the history of the Western Heights for future generations.
