Troop Transport Shaft

The shaft consists of 4 spiral staircases with a total of 214 steps and 5 galleries. It was built to provide access from the castle on the cliffs above to the gun battery at the bottom of the cliffs.


The shaft could be defended via defensive doors and loops from intruders, light was let into the shaft via lighting passages that lead out to the cliff face.


During the Second World War the lighting passages were converted into observation posts, accommodation areas were also excavated.
